STANDING PINE Tokyo is pleased to hold a grand-opening group exhibition entitled “Introduction” featuring five artists, Abdoulaye Konaté, Joël Andrianomearisoa, Pe Lang, Youki Hirakawa, and intext from Saturday 14th October to Saturday 18th November.

Abdoulaye Konaté was born in 1953 in Dire, Mali and currently lives and works in Bamako, Mali. He has created works by textile with various colours and motifs which are figurative, abstract or a combination of both, based on the African tradition and culture and they refer to political, social and environmental issues that he has been interested in. This exhibition features a large-scale textile work of blue, in all of his shades represent a very important colour and the national colour of Mali, symbolizing the country itself. This work was also exhibited at Aichi Triennale 2022.

Joël Andrianomearisoa was born in Antananarivo, Madagascar in 1977. He currently lives and works between Antananarivo and Paris. He explores many disciplines, from fashion to design, video to photography, scenography to architecture, installations to visual arts. His works are often made from textiles, paper, sometimes wood, minerals, or from unexpected objects that causes a non-explicit and abstract emotion and stories, which people perceive yet cannot describe in words. This exhibition features his textile works characterized by his strongest duality of black and white.

Pe Lang is a kinetic artist who was born in 1974 in Switzerland and currently lives and works in Switzerland. In a constant process of gaining and losing control, Lang‘s kinetic installation engages a refined and focused exploration of interaction between the kinetic, the visual and the sonic. Although the works are made by combining inorganic mechanical parts, they produce elegant and organic movements and sounds unexpected even by the artists. This exhibition shows some of his new works including “Random” which keeps randomly moving as if a living creature.

Youki Hirakawa was born in Nagoya in 1983 and stayed in Germany after completing his master’s degree, and currently lives and works in Aichi prefecture. By unraveling history and structure of things and manipulating the relationship between them, he has presented many works with various media including film, three-dimensional works, installation and so on. In this exhibition, a new body of work will be presented, which was created after his mysterious experience in the long period of the Corona disaster. They are created with colourful ready-mades and give us a different impression compared to his previous monochrome film works.

Graphic designers Yusuke Mimasu, Hiroshi Toyama and programmer Takehisa Mashimo form intext, reconsidering the present state of text, image and sound media communications, instead giving rise to a universal message in relation to language and culture. This exhibition reconstructs their various projects related to texts and languages and presents the possibility of new communication created from there.

The artists from various backgrounds, countries and generations have created the works in their own way. These works will get together for the first time at a new space and build a sense of unity and make a unique conversation for some reason. It would be great if you enjoy their works and our gallery’s philosophy and look forward to our new adventure.
